[ okay so genis tries not to complain, when he doesn't have to (hahaHA.. ) - well, at least about important things! for the most part, he's a self-sufficient boy who knows how to take care of himself, and growing up on the road with raine in sylvarant had taught him a lot about how to survive. even in iselia, food was always short, and means were always meager.

but he still had raine to take care of him, to support him, to ask a hundred questions to when he didn't understand something. so he can feed himself, at least, and stay warm(ish) when it's important, but..

well, there's more than that, to surviving! and genis is bored. so here he is, creeping up to dragonmama a little hesitantly. she's nice, but she's, you know. intimidating too. but that's never really stopped him before.. ]

Um. Excuse me?

[Zerigosa doesn't even look up. She's busy with some floating lists, scratching into them with an enchanted quill. It's a pretty blatant use of magic but hey it works.]

What do you need, little one?

[At the very least, she doesn't seem to be outright rude. It's a term of endearment, even if her tone could use a little more warmth.]

Um.. well.

[ how do you tell a scary dragon lady that you're bored? genis looks thoughtful for a moment, his brows furrowed, but then he's climbing up onto a nice comfortable flat rock and sitting cross legged, leaning with his hands on his ankles. ]

I was just wondering if there are any.. books, around. [ or anything at all. ] There's just - a lot I want to know, and I tried going to that town, but.. they wouldn't let me in.

Books?

[... Not really. They're giant lizards. Giant lizards don't have libraries. Still, she can't say it's a stupid idea; she understands that's how the younger races study...]

Still, the pursuit of knowledge is something I can appreciate. I can tutor you until the village accepts you, if you wish.

[ oh, no books. his expression falls, a bit, and he looks more than a little disgruntled. ]

They let that idiot Zelos in, though..

[ but whatever. a show of good faith - he can manage that much. after all, it's not so dissimilar from what he and raine had already been doing, but.. still. what a bummer, to have to deal with that even here! but - his expression brightens immediately at her suggestion. ]

Oh.. yeah! That'd be great! I mean.. if that's okay, if you're not busy or anything.

[Zerigosa is always busy, but he's a dragonsworn and a young one at that. She would be foolish to turn away someone with such potential.]

While I am making notes, is there anything else you need?

[ .. to ask or not to ask. ]

Um, well. [ DON'T CHICKEN OUT. ] .. a pillow or two might be nice!

Normally, dragons just make their own bedding. It seems I have made a kind of oversight...

[She considers, and then she waves her hand. Genis' bottom is now cushioned by a big plush blue pillow as big as he is.]

Will this suffice for the time being? I will make more available when I am finished with this list.

Oh.. um, well..

[ OH MAN now he's a little bit paranoid. make their own bedding? did he miss something? he's looking around, trying to think of an answer, when - poof! pillow! he looks surprised, then grins from ear to ear, both hands coming down to test its plushness. ]

W-wow..! That was really cool!

[She sort of forgot not everyone's a giant lizard. It happens.]

With practice, you may be able to conjure as well.

[ i mean - he's more than accustomed to using offensive spells and things, but something like conjuring a pillow out of thin air --

-- well. that's a whole different realm. doing things like that.. could be really useful. he's already learning that magic here is completely different from magic at home, but wow.. ]

Well, if there's anything I'm good at, it's studying! I'll practice until I can do it in my sleep!

[Zeri blinks at him, not accustomed to people being so... cheerful and happy to learn. That hasn't happened for a while.]

Anything is possible with arcane magic. You need only learn how to weave what you want. There are risks, of course-- arcane magic is wild-- but tenacity and discipline will serve you well.

[ yeah sorry lady zeri, you've got a fully fledged childnerd on your hands here, now. offering yourself as a tutor might've been a.. really bad thing; he's bound to be insatiable. at least until he gets his hands on some books. ]

[ his eyes lift, wandering toward the ceiling again, where the bright threads of energy weave and bind and split and weave again. wild, she says, and that much must definitely been true - it feels so different from mana in many ways, but.. similar enough still that he's adept enough, for a beginner. ]

I thought you might have a gift. That is not the only reason we chose you, but it endears you to our flight.

[What's left of it, anyway. She can't help but smile a little, and then she catches herself and goes back to writing on the floating paper with her sparkling pen. The little tally marks might mean numbers.]

[ books are great and all and genis would probably have a lot of fun climbing around on a dragon sized book but.. for long term studying yeah no that's not terribly conducive.

but wow, anything.. genis worked hard back home to master his spells, to learn everything about magic that he could, but man, conjuring things out of thin air - anything he wants - now that's super cool.

and the way she says those things - a hundred questions pop up in his mind. why they chose him.. he could just as easily spend all day asking her a hundred thousand things, but she's definitely still busy, and he's getting sleepy anyway, so.. another time. ]

Right, well.. guess I'll have to think of some way to get them to let me into that village. Maybe I'll sleep on it.

Surely you can find some way to be of use to them. Catching food, a gift of healing salves, even clearing the forest of minor demons-- though, I do not recommend doing that alone. Any of these things would certainly be seen in a positive light.

For now... rest well. [He should, with that pillow.]

[ food, items, demons.. okay, cool, these are all things he'll tuck away in his wee little mind for later use. he looks thoughtful, for a moment, then nods and springs to his feet again, taking up the edge of the pillow to drag it off and away. ]

Okay, thanks! [ p-pause -- ] Um.. maybe sometime when you're not busy, you could, um.. h-help me with my magic, a little bit?

[She nods patiently.]

Perhaps when you awaken. Which should be... ten hours from now, if my observations are correct.

[Generally Qilby's the sort of person who likes to know as much as he can about something before dealing with it. He researched stasis for years before cracking his first stasili crystal apart (and subsequently destroying his first lab on that particular planet.) Zaap gates would never have come about if he hadn't spent lifetimes watching the way eliatropes warped space before applying it to stone and circuitry. A less observant man wouldn't have seen the potential tucked away within the Mechasms that he did.

And so that's why even though it's been nearly a month since he'd been dropped in the middle of this war, Qilby still hasn't spoken to the so-called dragon mage of his flight. It's not for lack of trying to get information on the guy, it's just that not a single dragon in the sanctum will look at him for more than two seconds, much less speak to him (unless he broaches the subject of those eggs-- which he did once and only once.) All he's managed to get is a name, all the good it does him: Surion.

It's a shame, but thanks to recent developments, he can't put off the chat much longer. Time to find out just how things work around here.]

A word, Surion?

[Surion doesn't seem to be terribly busy. He finishes his conversation with another dragon before turning to meet his guest.]

Well enough. There's much in your world that's worthy of study -- it's just a pity that a war is the only reason I've been able to see it.

[A pity indeed. Usually he gets a few good decades of research done on a world before something horrible and/or cataclysmic happens. But that's not what he's concerned about here!] Having met some of my fellow Dragonsworn-- [i.e. basically ignoring them] --I've wondered for some time now... How is it that you chose us? And not just those of the Black Flight. All of us?

Oh, yes. Azeroth is massive, untamed and beautiful. It's also home to a host of energies we barely understand.

[Surion takes a moment to think about this.]

Well, we didn't exactly hand-pick you. With the help of the Bronze Dragonflight, we are able to see how the Legion sets its sights on other worlds. And then, well, we hope to find someone on that world who can help. Arcane magic is wild and unpredictable in its way. We do what we can to empower the Dragonsworn, but at the end of the day, it's little more than chance.

Trying to build a sustainable army out of essentially random people, as you can imagine, has its problems.

I can imagine. But chance? [He echoes Surion, looking a little taken aback.] Out of all the answers I'd considered... Random chance was hardly the first one to come to mind.

It was flattering to think that out of the countless worlds and millions of able-bodied fighters out there, I was chosen-- but I suppose that does explain everything. [And he laughs a little at that. Qilby hardly looks like soldier-material, as thin and old and one-armed as he is, and he knows it.

A pause.] And the wild nature of this magic also explains how someone from my future has shown up here as well, I suppose?

I can't divulge any details, but... yes. [Poor Qilby with his one arm. Yet Surion knows some of his potential-- not all of it, but there is great magic within him.] Do not sell yourself short, however. You could match any of the warriors with your intellect, I am sure.

[He looks a little surprised to hear about the future thing, but he nods.]

Yes, unfortunately. Time is not some steadily-flowing, predictable stream. Such things happen.
